14 Jun 2020 05:45 | மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்ட நாள் / நேரம்: 14 Jun 2020 16:41 மே 1ஆம் தேதி உலகத் தொழிலாளர் தினம். பொது விடுமுறை நாள் என்பதால் பலரும் அன்று ஓய்வில் இருந்திருப்பர். ஆனால், 39 வயதான டாக்டர் ஜெயந்த் வெங்கட்ரமணி ஐயரோ வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர் விடுதியில் தொண்டூழியம் புரிந்துகொண்டு இருந்தார். கொவிட்-19 கிருமித்தொற்றுப் பரிசோதனைகள் பல்வேறு வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர் விடுதிகளிலும் நடைபெற்று வர, அதற்கு உதவ முன்வந்த மருத்துவர்களில் சிங்கப்பூர் தேசிய கண் நிலைய மருத்துவரான டாக்டர் ஜெயந்த்தும் ஒருவர். வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர்களுக்கு மருத்துவ ஆலோசனை வழங்கி உடல் நலத்தோடு நின்றுவிடாமல், அவர்களின் ஒட்டுமொத்த நலனிலும் கவனம் செலுத்தவேண்டும் என்பது டாக்டர் ஜெயந்த்தின் கருத்து. “சில மாதங்களாக ஊழியர்கள் விடுதிகளிலேயே முடங்கிக் கிடக்கும்போது, பதற்றம், கவலை போன்ற உணர்ச்சிகளால் பாதிக்கப்படக்கூடும் என்பதால் அவர்களுக்கு மனரீதியான ஆதரவும் தேவை,” என்றார் டாக்டர் ஜெயந்த். உளவியல் பிரச்சினைகளால் பாதிக்கப்படாதிருக்க, அவர்களை ஆக்கபூர்வமான நடவடிக்கைகளில் ஈடுபடுத்த வேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கத்துடன் டாக்டர் ஜெயந்த் ஒரு சிறப்பு ‘சிங்ஹெல்த்’ மருத்துவர்கள் பணிக்குழுவோடு இணைந்து செயல்பட்டு வருகிறார். இவர் கடந்த மே மாதத்தில் இருந்து பல்வேறு வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர் விடுதிகளுக்குச் சென்று, அங்குள்ள ஊழியர்களிடமிருந்து கருத்துத் திரட்டி வருகிறார். கொரோனா தொற்று குறித்த தகவல்களும் உதவியும் அவர்களைச் சென்றடைகிறதா, எத்தகைய நடவடிக்கைகள் அவர்களுக்கு பயனுள்ளதாக விளங்கும் போன்ற தகவல்கள் சேகரிக்கப்பட்டன. கிருமித்தொற்று குறித்த தகவல்களும் இதர பிரச்சினைகளுக்கு உதவிகளும் வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர்களுக்கு முறையாகச் சென்றடைவதை உறுதிசெய்வதோடு, விடுதிகளில் இருந்தவாறே அவர்கள் பயனுள்ள நடவடிக்கைகளில் ஈடுபடும் விதமாக உரிய பங்காளிகளுடன் மருத்துவர்கள் குழு இணைந்து பணி ஆற்றுகிறது. “பெரும்பாலான வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர்கள் கிருமித்தொற்றின் தன்மையைப் பற்றி புரிந்துவைத்திருப்பது எங்களுக்கு மனநிறைவு அளிக்கிறது. இலவச யோகா, ஆங்கில வகுப்புகள், கலை தொடர்பான படைப்புகளை அவர்களுக்கு வழங்க சமூகத்தினரும் அமைப்புகளும் முன்வந்துள்ளன,” என்று டாக்டர் ஜெயந்த் கூறினார். கடந்த சில வாரங்களாக வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர்களிடம் கலந்துரையாடியது, வாழ்க்கையை வேறொரு கண்ணோட்டத்தில் இருந்தும் பார்க்கும்படி இவரைச் சிந்திக்க வைத்துள்ளது. “விடுதிகளில் உள்ள வசதிகள், கொடுக்கப்படும் உணவு போன்ற விஷயங்களைப் பற்றி அவர்கள் பேசுவார்கள் என்று நினைத்தேன். ஆனால் மருத்துவர் ஒருவர் தங்களிடம் நலம் விசாரிக்க வந்ததையே அவர்கள் ஒரு பெரிய வி‌‌‌ஷயமாகக் கருதுகின்றனர்,” என்றார் டாக்டர் ஜெயந்த். கொரோனா பரிசோதனைகளை முடித்துவிட்டு வீடு திரும்பும் ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் சமூக இடைவெளியை கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டியதாக உள்ளதால் தம்முடைய நான்கு மற்றும் இரண்டு வயதுக் குழந்தைகளை நெருங்க முடியவில்லையே என்ற ஏக்கம் இவருக்கு இருக்கத்தான் செய்கிறது. ஆனாலும், சக குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்கள் இவருக்கு ஆதரவு அளித்து, பக்கபலமாக இருந்து வருகின்றனர். மருத்துவத் துறையில் கால் பதித்ததை இத்தகைய அனுபவங்கள் அர்த்தமுள்ளதாக்குவதாகக் குறிப்பிடும் டாக்டர் ஜெயந்த், கிருமித்தொற்று நிலைமை சீரடைந்த பிறகும் வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர்களுடன் மேம்பட்ட தொடர்புகள் நீடிக்க வேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறார்.

I was impressed by the excellent service at Clinic A1 Eye, from Dr Jayant Venkatramani Iyer to service ambassador Helen, and also staff at the visual acuity room, the pharmacy and the home delivery team. Though my record in the system had been erased, as I had not visited the clinic for almost 6½ years, a patient and cheerful Dr Jayant managed to retrieve it. “When I chose medicine and particularly ophthalmology as a career I wanted to ensure that a significant portion of my career would be spent in humanitarian work,” said Dr Jayant during a chat after a long day at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), where he is an associate consultant. While training to be an ophthalmologist, he visited Myanmar, India, China, the Philippines and Sri Lanka and got to meet people who had dedicated much of their lives towards helping others. “These travels and the people I met inspired me to set up The Vision Mission (TVM) in early 2014,” said Dr Jayant about his initiative which is a Singapore-based non-profit organisation. He added that while it was good to go on regular mission trips abroad and contribute towards the efforts of sight restoration for a few people in underprivileged backgrounds every now and then, he felt that this was not good enough. “I needed to set up a long-term, sustainable model of eye care that could be replicated in various parts of Asia where access to eye care is limited.” Aimed to provide free eye care, so he discussed this idea with his colleague Dr Jason Lee – an associate consultant with The Eye Institute at Tan Tock Seng Hospital – and his Raffles Junior College batch-mate and close friend Avinash Jayaraman, an entrepreneur. “Together we decided to set up The Vision Mission with the primary aim of providing free eye care for those in need by creating locally-run sustainable eye care programmes and vision clinics augmented by expertise from fellow Singaporean and regional eye care experts.” Read more here: https://www.tabla.com.sg/jrsrc/131115full/epage012013/TA20151113-TAB-012-00-013.html

Aug 2021 Like many in Singapore’s healthcare ecosystem, Jayant V Iyer bravely volunteered to help manage the Covid-19 outbreak among dormitory-based migrant workers last year. But when he arrived at one of the affected dormitories, the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) eye surgeon registered a sense of uncertainty among the workers.
