Teleconsultation is not suitable for eye emergencies and does not replace an in person eye examination when one is required.

Can Eye Teleconsultation Help With My Symptoms?
An eye teleconsultation may be suitable if you have a selected minor or acute eye concern, need initial medical advice, or are unsure whether you should attend a clinic in person.
Red, Irritated or Watery Eyes
Including suspected viral or allergic conjunctivitis.
Mild Eye Discomfort

How Does an Eye Teleconsultation Work?
1
Tell the Doctor What Is Happening
Your doctor will discuss your symptoms and relevant medical history.
2
Show Your Eyes Over Video
Where appropriate, your doctor will carry out a basic eye assessment that can safely be performed over video.
3
Discuss Possible Causes
Based on your symptoms, relevant medical history and what can be assessed remotely, your doctor may discuss possible causes where appropriate.
4
Know What to Do Next
Your doctor will advise whether to manage your symptoms remotely, attend an eye clinic, or have further assessment.
What Happens After an Eye Teleconsultation?
Depending on your symptoms and what can safely be assessed through video, your doctor may recommend one of the following:

Manage Remotely Where Appropriate
Treatment or self care measures may be recommended where appropriate.

Attend an Eye Clinic
An in person examination may be recommended if your eyes need to be examined directly or additional tests are required.

Further Assessment
Further or specialist assessment may be recommended where appropriate.

Some eye tests cannot be performed through video. Eye pressure measurements, eye scans and other tests requiring physical examination or specialised equipment require an in person visit.
When Should I Not Use Eye Teleconsultation?
Some eye symptoms require urgent in person medical attention. Do not wait for a teleconsultation if you experience:
Sudden or Major Loss of Vision
Including sudden significant blurring or a sudden dark curtain or shadow in your vision.

Chemical Splash or Burn to the Eye
Including exposure to chemicals or substances that may have injured or burned the eye.

Significant Eye Injury
Including an injury where something has entered the eye or an injury caused by a fast moving object.
Severe
Eye Pain
Especially when accompanied by nausea, vomiting, headache or a major change in vision.
Sudden Worsening of Vision
Severe pain or sudden worsening of vision after an eye procedure including after recent eye surgery.
If you experience any of these symptoms, seek urgent in person medical attention or attend an emergency service promptly. Do not wait for a teleconsultation.
